Has the Boondock Saints sequel been canned?

Boondock Saints is the kind of film that really polarized moviegoers—you either loved it or you hated it. Check out this critic’s loathing.

Those that loved it, however, have been eagerly awaiting a sequel. Fans were given hope when Troy Duffy—who wrote and directed the first film—has publicly stated that a sequel was in the works. Since then, however, the production details have been removed from imdb.com (it was once here). Not a good sign. Moreover, none of the actors said to be coming back for the sequel have confirmed.

We do have some hope, however. In August 2006, Norman Reedus, who starred in Boondock Saints, revealed that a sequel for Boondock Saints is on the way.

“I’m not really at liberty to say what the status of Boondock Saints is but I can say it’s good for the sequel. There was a whole lot of stuff that needed to get cleared up and he got it cleared up, which is great…. We’re going to introduce a third saint who is helping us. I think [David Della] Rocco is coming back in a dream flashback. The script is really great. I know Troy has done a lot of changes on it but the last script I read was amazing.” Source.

In May of this year, Troy Duffy fanned the flames with a posting to his myspace blog:

O’kay, here’s the scoop. I know you’re impatient on the sequel. Not be long now, Daniel sahn! Long form contracts and business affairs can be very time consuming but we are close, so keep the faith. Also, we are simultaneously financing my follow up to BDSII, “The Good King.” There are a lot of logistics with this stuff and no one is more frustrated with it all than me. I want to get goin! Action! Cut! Moving on! I have officially started working on my shot list and something I call my Boondock Bible. That’s how I’m keeping sane while the lawyers argue and wrap this shit up! I’ll get you guys back soon.

But, as the past has shown, Troy Duffy is a great self-promoter. Thus, I’m going to remain skeptical until I see some concrete proof, ie from a studio exec, that this project has been greenlighted.

Rumour has it (dirty, movie forum rumour—the worst kind) that the sequel was shelved by Troy Duffy after running out of money and being unable to pay for production. Some cite the re-release of the original Boondock Saints on May 22, 2006, and the special edition DVD, as possible evidence that Duffy is trying to drum up money to save the film.

As late as July of this year, however, a Sean Patrick Flanery fansite relayed the following:

The Boondock Saints sequel has garnered tons of questions. Here are a few answers… The film is in the works. Sean will be involved. More details will be revealed as soon as possible.

So, really, after some googling, I’ve determined that a sequel has been written and funding is currently being sought. Of course, there is no guarantee that a sequel will be made, or when it will be made, but it is a possibility. The rumours of it being in production, as far as I can tell, are all false.

Here and there—depends on who you ask—the film is variously ascribed the titles of The Second Coming and All Saints Day. But, as the film isn’t in production yet, these are obviously just working titles.

It looks like almost the whole cast are expected to return: Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flannery and Billy Connoly, etc. However, it looks like Willem Dafoe has been written out. The unofficial Boondock Saints FAQ tells of a new character, Eunice Bloom, who was written in to compensate for ‘his expected absence’. She has been described by Troy Duffy as Smecker’s protégé, about 30 years old, red hair and a “real looker”.
