The Waterloo Warriors (my alma mater) won the opening game of their season, posting a convincing 42 points over the Univesity of Toronto Varsity Blues.
Writes Josh Brown of the Record:
It was a successful debut for Dennis McPhee and his University of Waterloo football club. The first-year coach was all smiles after his Warriors pounded the University of Toronto 42-17 yesterday afternoon at the newly renovated Varsity Centre.
“You always want to win your first game,” said McPhee, who was hired in the off-season to help get UW’s pigskin program back on track after seven consecutive losing campaigns. “It was a hard-fought battle but our kids kept bringing it. I think we showed some good things but we have a lot of growing to do. We’re not there yet.”
I met Coach McPhee and the new administration in the off season — was very impressed with their outlook and work ethic.
Writes David Grossman of the Toronto Star:
Not even playing in a rebuilt Varsity Stadium field and fielding 19 new players could keep the Blues from extending their losing streak to 42 straight games. The Waterloo Warriors crushed the Blues 42-17 yesterday in their OUA opener before an announced crowd of 2,850 fans. The loss leaves the Blues just five games short of tying the national university record of 47 losses set by the arch-rival York Lions.
It was Waterloo’s 10th consecutive win over Toronto dating back to 1997.
Hmmmm — that streak (10 consecutive wins) should of been longer, save for a blip back when I played — marring an otherwise great season. Well, if I recall correctly, dropping that game to the Blues back in 1997 served as a wakeup call for us all, as we marched towards the Churchill bowl.
